CEREBRAL PALSY INFORMATION

Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition affecting control of muscle movement. Cerebral refers to anything in the head and Palsy describes anything wrong with control of the muscles in the body.

When a child has Cerebral Palsy some of the muscles in the body are not being used in a normal fashion. Children with Cerebral Palsy may not be able to walk, talk, eat, or play in the same way that other children do.

Cerebral Palsy can be caused by damage to the brain during, before, or after birth. Cerebral Palsy is not progressive meaning the brain damage does not get worse over time, but the effects of Cerebral Palsy such as muscle spasticity can get worse over time. Cerebral Palsy is not a disease that is communicable.

When describing a type of Cerebral Palsy, the movement classification and limbs affected are combined to tell which movement disorder is occurring along with what part of the body the movement disorder affects.

There are four main types of Cerebral Palsy that are classified by movement:

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, Spastic Cerebral Palsy, and Mixed Cerebral Palsy.

Types of Cerebral Palsy are also identified by the number of limbs affected: Diplegia, Hemiplegia, Monoplegia, Triplegia, and Quadriplegia. If a child has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy for example, this type of Cerebral Palsy is characterized by muscles that are stiff and tight with an increased resistance to being stretched that affect all four limbs, however, the legs are more affected than the arms.

For more information on the different types of Cerebral Palsy, visit our section on Cerebral Palsy types.

Cerebral Palsy can be caused by an injury to an infant’s brain before, during, or after the birthing process and there are many different things that can injure that infant’s brain causing neurological damage.

Medical malpractice occurs when a doctor and their medical staff fail to do something for you or your child that a responsible health care provider would do otherwise. If you feel the following indicators may have or did occur, a medical mistake may have caused your child’s Cerebral Palsy.
