SPASTIC CEREBRAL PALSY

Spastic Cerebral Palsy is known as the most common form or type of Cerebral Palsy and is characterized by muscles that are stiff and tight with an increased resistance to being stretched.

A child with Spastic Cerebral Palsy has muscle groups that are tight limiting the amount and range of movements they can do. For example, children with Spastic Cerebral Palsy have difficulty in moving from one position to another in addition to have a hard time holding on to and letting go of objects.

When a child has Spastic Cerebral Palsy that affects mainly the legs and not so much the hands, it is referred to as Spastic Diplegia. Since the brain injury causing the leg problems, affects the lower part of the body, hand –eye coordination is weakened and thus difficult.

An in-depth look at the causes of Spasticity in Spastic Cerebral Palsy finds that
Spastic Cerebral Palsy refers to the increased or tension and tone of a muscle. A normal muscle has enough tone to maintain a posture or movement against the force of gravity, all the while providing flexibility and movement.

Nerves from a muscle will send a command to increase muscle tone to the spinal cord. These nerves are called sensory nerves fibers since they tell the spinal cord just how much tone that particular muscle has. Now the command to reduce its muscle tone comes from nerves in the brain. When these two commands are well coordinated the muscles work smoothly and in unison.

Since normal muscle groups work in pairs, one group contracts while the other group relaxes allowing for the desired range of movements, however, in a child with Spastic Cerebral Palsy, these muscles become active at the same time causing both muscle groups to tense up or become spastic which leads to range of movement problems among Cerebral Palsy children and adults.
In a person with Spastic Cerebral Palsy, severe trauma to an infants brain has occurred and in particular that area of the brain that has been damaged controls the tone of a muscle and arm and leg movement.

A child as a result of having Spastic Cerebral Palsy is unable to control the amount of tone or flexibility a muscle should have when movement is occurring.

Spastic Cerebral Palsy can be controlled by certain treatments that include oral medication, Botox injections, baclofen infusion, orthopaedic surgery, SDR, physical therapy, and leg braces are some of the methodsused to treat Spastic Cerebral Palsy.

Oral medications are used to treat Spastic Cerebral Palsy children, such as valium and baclofen, however the consensus seems to be that they do not reduce the spasticity in an adult or child with Spastic Cerebral Palsy.

Injections of Botox into muscles have been used recently in the last few year as a method of treatment for Spastic Cerebral Palsy. Botox can weaken muscles for 3-4 months after injection, reducing spasticity in a limited group of muscles that have been damaged as a result of Spastic Cerebral Palsy. Botox injections and its ability to reduce spasticity are only temporary.

Baclofen infusion uses a pump that is implanted in the abdominal wall of a person with Spastic Cerebral Palsy and can be effective in reducing spasticity in spinal cord injuries as well as in the reduction Cerebral Palsy Spasticity.

Baclofen infusions, however, are not permanent and when they are stopped the spasticity comes back. There are also many dangerous risks involved with baclofen infusions such as overdose, meningitis, and other complications that can require hospitalization. In addition, long term effects of this method for treating Spastic Cerebral Palsy are not known.

Orthopedic operations that include muscle release and tendon-lengthening procedures are also used to treat the deformities that are associated with Spastic Cerebral Palsy improving the range of motion of the joints and as a result makes it easier for children with Spastic Cerebral Palsy to move the lower limbs.

Muscle weakness and abnormal postures and deformities are a major side effect of these operations but keep in mind that spasticity is not directly reduced, but rather only the consequences of spasticity in Spastic Cerebral Palsy.
